TREAD started in 2019 with one white court shoe. It went to work, did the school run, and got replaced every year, because the leather cracked across the toe and the glued sole peeled away from the upper. The fix was never a new design. It was the same shoe, made properly.
So we make one shoe. Not one shoe a season: one shoe. The TREAD Court comes low in six colors and high in two, and the runner and the slip follow the same thinking. Nothing drops by season, so the pair you bought three years ago is still the current one.
We re-cut the same court last until it disappeared on the foot. That is the whole ambition: a shoe you stop noticing by lunchtime. Everything else serves it.
Start with the leather. Full-grain keeps the tough outer surface of the hide, so it creases where your foot bends instead of cracking. Ours comes from gold-rated tanneries. Underfoot there is a cork-lined footbed, which molds to you in the first week and then stays that way. Around the heel of the low, a suede collar. Under all of it, a recycled rubber cupsole that is stitched to the upper, which is what lets our workshop fit a new one when it wears through. Every pair is cut, stitched and finished in Portugal.
Because the low, the high and the slip all sit on one last, your size carries across. Know it in one and you know it in all of them. Buy true to size; between sizes, take the size down, because the leather gives a little in the first week.
It also means the shoe gets better instead of newer. Every improvement goes into the same pair, not into a replacement for it. One customer in Bristol sent his back for a new sole after three years and got the same shoe back with new grip. The upper he had broken in kept going.
And it means no seasonal drop built to make last year's pair look tired. When Bone and Chocolate sell through, they come back in the same leather on the same last, and your old pair still matches the new one on the shelf.
One shoe, properly considered, turns out to be a lot of decisions you never have to make again.
We put a booth in the shop for a weekend. Four frames, a shoe in most of them, nobody standing still.
Two minutes a week and three tools. The routine that keeps full-grain leather creasing instead of cracking.
Plain court shoes all look alike from a distance. The differences that matter are easy to check once you know the questions to ask.
Four shapes at one price. Which to buy first, which to buy second, and what each one is really for.
Six colors, one shoe. Start with the trousers you actually wear, not the swatch that looks best on its own.
